SPITI - A SAFARI | BARALACHA CHANDRATAL TREK

Spiti - A Safari

AREA: KINNAUR, SPITI, LAHAUL. (HIMACHAL PRADESH)
DURATION : 3 weeks (approximately)
TRIP GRADE : Moderately demanding.
SEASON : July & August

Rudyard Kiplings' description of Spiti in œkim - " Atlast they entered a world within a world. A valley of leagues where the high hills were fashioned of the mere rubble and refuse from the knees of the mountains. Surely the Gods live here."

Isolated in itıs remote fastness of trans Himalayan mountains, the Spiti valley is a forgotten wonderland of cold mountain desert, sheer cliffs, precariously perched Buddhist monastries, oasis of green around tiny villages, shy hospitality. The safari traverses the three tribal districts of kinnaur, Spiti & Lahaul that border Tibet and Ladakh.

We approach Spiti along the Satluj river valley, through the magnificent scenery of Kinnaur, sharing evening of music and the fiery local fruit liquor is an experience all itıs own. Proceed up the Spiti valley which is one of the worldsı premier geological museums. Hillsides strewn with fossils are indicative of a time when this area formed the bed of the Tethys Sea.

We camp at various enticing spots along the way, take day hikes into villages and exploring monasteries and also parts of the Pin valley National Park home of the Ibex. Driving out of Spiti we cross the Kunzum La pass ( 4551 m) into Lahaul. Take a short, optional trek to the Chandratal lake and follow the Chandra river till we weave our way upto the Rohtang Pass (3978 m) and into the verdant Kullu valley and civilization
